She soon disagreed with the Captain who was bringing up his seven children in the military discipline manner. Maria insisted that the children be granted a smoother life filled with music and fun.

Soon the children in The Sound of Music who were aged five to sixteen starts liking Maria though they initially act cold and hostile towards her. The joys of music and singing make them closer to Maria. The Captain realizes his excessive strictness is unjustified and tries to enjoy life himself too. Meanwhile, Maria falls in love with him but discovers that he is engaged to a wealthy baroness Elsa. Elsa, growing jealous of Maria convinces her to leave the household.

The Sound of Music then shows that the baroness is unable to get friendly with the children. On Mother Abbesss insistence Maria returns to the family. The Captain tells Elsa that their loveless marriage would not work. Elsa realizes that the Captain loves Maria and she leaves for Vienna. Soon afterwards, Maria and the Captain confess their love for each other and wed.

The story of The Sound of Music then climaxes towards the end. Austria being taken over by the Nazis, the Captain is forced to join back in the military service. Totally reluctant to support the Reich, the Captain convinces the district party leader that as part of the Trapp Family Singers he must appear for a performance at the Salzburg Music Festival. From there with much difficulty, the family manages to run away over the mountains to Switzerland. The Sound of Music
