Church building is a building which is used for prayer, worship, or other public religious services. Jews were the first Christians who were the residents of Israel and worshiped in the Temple in Jerusalem and synagogues. Worshipping in temples involved ritual sacrifice which included killing the animals as an offering to god as repentance for sin and this had continued till Jesus became the last offering on Calvary. The church at Dura Europos has a special room dedicated for baptisms with a large baptismal font.

The history of the Church building states it to be an institution which was developed for public Jewish worship. Followed by the commentary there was a daily and weekly service of readings from the Torah or the prophets. When there was not much population, which was seen in many towns of the Diaspora the rituals were organized in homes. The church buildings are generally a constructed house or a building which earlier was a public property. There was no need of any fancy construction as the sole purpose was a meeting room with adequate seating, a case for the Torah scrolls, and a raised platform for the reader and preacher.

In the earlier days in the church building Jesus himself participated for the service as a reader and commentator while his followers preached in synagogues in some cities. After the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70, there was a revolutionary movement between the Christians and Judaism. During the 2nd century the Church had became Gentile.

A common architecture for church buildings is the cross shape which is a long central rectangle, with side rectangles, and a rectangle in front for the altar space or sanctuary. The beauty of these churches is through a dome or through the vaulted space in the interior which is a representation of the heavens. Amongst the other common shapes which symbolize the fact that church brings light to the world is a circle which represents eternity, or an octagon or similar star shape. Another common feature is the spire, a tall tower on the west end of the church or over the crossing.

In A.D 257 when there was a siege by Parthian troops the church buildings which were located in the outermost blocks of the city grid were partially destroyed and filled with rubble to reinforce the city wall. The Syrian city of Dura-Europos on the West bank of the Euphrates was an outpost town between the Roman and Parthian empires. In the New Testament many incidents are clearly stated about Jesus visits to the temple as an infant with his parents. Church building
