Underground Home Residence Atrium Covered By Earth

Underground home is that kind of home which as the name suggests lies below the surface; to be more appropriate is covered by the earth. However, at the same time it must be remembered that it is not possible that the entire home be below the level of the earth as some basic necessities required for living need to be received, for instance fresh air to breathe. For this at least the windows needs to be uncovered by the earth.

Atrium is a type of an underground home. Usually an underground home can be as less as 0.2 meters under the earth or as much as 2.7 meters. This structure (atrium) is around 0.9 meters under the earth. The atrium has facilities to receive sunlight which is made possible by the existence of 4 walls. These walls do not only provide sunlight but also the heat of the sun and a view of the outside world. Being under the earth's surface, the atrium design is a help during winter barring the cold breeze. The atrium house provides no hindrance to the land above as it can barely be seen from above.

There are both positive sides and negatives of underground homes. The positive angles are that those living in such homes are saved from facing harsh weather, be it extreme heat or cold weather. This makes life in underground homes cozier. Sustaining such homes is also comparatively easier. These houses do not need painting as often, making it more economic. But not to forget there are some negative angles too. The initial expenditure of building such homes is comparatively higher. Special care should be taken to avoid damp problems, and it is not as easy to sell these houses as it is to sell those built above the ground.

For building an underground home certain factors are needed to paid attention to. It has been found out that building such homes in areas which faces intense weather conditions is wise. Appropriate areas are the likes of northern Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. The geographical conditions, like the steep of the plain are also a factor to be considered. The flatter the plain it is easier for the earth to be dug making it more economical.

Soil is another factor that should be given a consideration while building underground homes. The soils most suitable for this type of constructions are gravel and sand. These kinds of soils are porous in nature thereby helping in easy drainage. Soils not suitable for the purpose is for instance clay soil which does not support drainage as such. The level of water should also be considered. Building such homes above water level is very important. Earth sheltered buildings
