
The historic city of Lewisburg is situated in Green Country of West Virginia, established in 1782 and named after Andrew Lewis. The city is located in cradles of Allegheny and is rich in natural scenic beauty, loved by tourists. Every year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration is held in this city. Annual State Fair of West Virginia, Lewisburg takes place in the city in the mid of August.
The state fair was initially started on 1st August, 1881 but in the city of Wheeling. The fair was started in Lewisburg in 1941. Before that there were some local events taken place in the city and were known as Lewisburg Fair. State Fair of West Virginia, Lewisburg, is held every year in the large open field of State Fair Grounds situated nearby Lewisburg. The fair lingers for 9 days and so many events are featured on the field. There are horse track, grandstands; exhibition buildings along with a wide open area for carnivals located on The State Fair Grounds. There is an importance of agriculture in this fair along with other events. There is exhibition cum competition among farmers, members of 4-H and FFA along with exhibitions of farm as well as industrial tools by manufacturer.
A special type of horse riding event takes place, in which horses run in a specific manner and known as Harness Racing. There is traveling festival with night concerts performed in the State Fair of West Virginia, Lewisburg. Country songs or Oldies tracks are mainly performed in these concerts. Though no gambling is allowed recently in Harness Racing but there is a special type of lottery game, Bingo takes place in the fair, under law of the state. according to 2006 there was a gathering of 174,438 public excluding the children under five and the number is growing on year by year.
State Fair of West Virginia, Lewisburg, is run by a non-profit organization and gets no money from the state government though it is supported by the state. The committee allows only paid entries. There are events like Antique Tractor Challenge, Kiddie Tractor Pull and Peoples Choice Tractor along with the recipe challenge. The champion of each competition will receive prize and other facilities. The fair is favorably supported by The State Department of Agriculture and West Virginia University.
In 2008 the fair is going to be held from 8th to 16th August. State Fair of West Virginia, Lewisburg, is the stuff of midway foods. There are classics foods like corn dogs, spiral fries, turkey legs, nachos along with local foods such as sweet potatoes fries, corn bread, country ham and the list is so on. There are some wonderful events like fireworks shows, juggling shows. Political parties are also precipitate in the political years. As on 2006 the fair earned revenue of $8.9 million.
