Metal Roofing Economical With Galvanized Tin Stainless Steel Sheets

Metal Roofing is system of roofing with the help of metal sheets or tiles. It is one of the most commonly used roofing today. It is one of the most economical options for roofing and the materials range from galvanized tin roofing to stainless-steel sheets. It is particularly suitable for buildings where concrete roofing is not possible.

One of the main advantages of metal roofing is that it is made of lightweight material. This makes it ideal for portable or temporary structures. It is one of the main building materials used in the developing world and has actually helped to spread civilization. When the question of covering of large buildings arises metal produces the answer. It is extremely useful in such circumstances and its low strength to weight ratio makes it ideal choice. A number of designs are available in such sheets like Large Sprung Curves, Rolled Bullnose and Copper Cupolas.

Durability is another plus point of metal roofing. An oxidized version of durable metals like copper, zinc, aluminum and lead or stainless steel are good for strong and lasting roof. Modern metal roofing materials use a coating of zinc and aluminum on the materials for a cheaper and lasting alternative. These coatings can vary according to the harshness of the user location. There are even coatings available for industrial and marine use. When coated with high gloss materials the sheets act as thermal reflectors and cut down the energy consumption.

But like all materials metal roofing too has few disadvantages. Large spans of roof are prone to thermal movements. In curved roof surfaces such movements can cause noises. Again dissimilar materials or exposure to corrosive materials can cause rapid corrosion to such roofing. In such cases the maintenance becomes costly.

Metal roofing was originally done with corrugated galvanized iron sheets. The base was wrought iron coated with zinc. The next was galvanized steel roofing. It is still used for heritage structures and also forms a large section of the roofing in the developing countries. A material produced under the brand name Zincalume has become popular and its constituents are 55% zinc, 43% aluminum and 1.6% silicon and it may be noted that it is not galvanized steel. Then there is stainless steel for harsh conditions, aluminum for durability though expensive or copper which is reusable. But copper is the most expensive.

The latest in the range of metal roofing is the stone-coated steel shingle. They are made from pressure bonded, zinc or aluminum alloy coated steel. The finishes are variable from acrylic, bonded or stone chip in various earth tones and these are fade and UV resistant. They are lightweight and even walkable, fireproof, withstands 120 mile per hour wind and are guranteed for fifty years against fading, cracking, rusting, curling and de-granulation. Metal roof
