American Council On Education For Colleges Universities

American Council on Education is an organization that deals with the higher education needs of the nation, addressing various issues related to higher education. Various colleges, universities and other higher education related organizations, corporations etc. are members of the organization and together they wish to realize the challenges associated with higher education.

American Council on Education is concerned with three priorities. Representation, Leadership development and service are the basic strategies that the organization prioritizes on. About 1800 educational institutions have become its members and associates. Through initiatives, program research, they wish to bring about development in the field of higher education. Access to educational sources, successful attainment of such knowledge, equity and diversity are some of its main areas of focus.

The organization also wishes to bring about changes in the public policy, involving the government in the development of higher education. It is involved in numerous programs and services to fulfill its various objectives. There are centers for advancement of racial and ethnic equality, leadership development etc.

American Council on Education is involved in providing adult learner programs, centers for effective leadership, international initiatives, college credit recommendation service, fellows program etc. Adult learners can access a number of sources to continue their post-secondary education. The Center for Lifelong Learning helps people with several programs and services, which are provided, to colleges, universities, the military, business, industry etc. National initiatives, workshops and publications are used to carry out such programs.

Professional development programs and activities are offered by the American Council on Education to enhance leadership qualities of the higher educational administrators. The Center for Effective Leadership has several programs developed for this purpose. The Library and Information Service segment of the organization provides books, journals, electronic material etc., for those dealing with higher education. They also provide opportunities for the GED or General Educational Development Test, which is used to test knowledge.

There are also special programs for women, military people along with its transcript and publishing services. The American Council on Education started in 1918, to address the higher education needs of America and at present it has developed numerous programs tuned to achieve this objective.
