Goodfellas Crime Thriller Drama Nominated For BAFTA Film Awards


Crime drama has held a significant position as a chapter in the cinematic literature since the beginning of cinema as a form of art. This has also held the viewers tight to their seats in theatres because of the thrill and drama at every point of the film way. Goodfellas also known as GoodFellas has been successful in delivering a considerably high degree of thrill and suspense of a true crime story to the viewers and hence being nominated in the Academy Awards.

Though Goodfellas has been nominated for six categories of best writing and screenplay, best picture, best film editing, best director, best actress in a supporting role and best actor in a supporting role, it is only the last of all categories for which Joe Pesci received the Oscar Awards. Besides the Academy, the film was also nominated for Eddie Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, Best Cinematography Award and several others. It has won huge number of awards.

Goodfellas is about a half-Irish and half- Sicilian New York kid Henry Hill who grew up idolizing a group of gangsters dwelling in his impoverished neighborhood. At a very young age he joined the gangsters and started leading his life as a famous gangster in his forthcoming future. In doing these, he was accompanied by two other guys, Tommy and Paulie of the same origin preventing them from transferring themselves into made guy from stand up guy. This led to many odds and evens that the protagonist went through.

The film premiered its show in the Venice Film Festival in September 1990 but released in USA on September 19. In the same month but before being released in USA, Goodfellas was released in France and Sweden. After September 19, it was released in Italy, Finland, Germany, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Argentina in the same year. In the year after, it was released in South Korea in 1991 and Czechoslovakia in early 1992. Lately, its premiere was again held in the Moonlight Matines Film Festival in 2007.

Goodfellas has been ranked number 94 out of 100 in the American Film Institute which came to number 92 after 2007 premiere. The film was deemed to be culturally significant by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in the year 2000.The film was taken to be the greatest film of all time in the 2005 Total Film. It was also acclaimed to be the best mob movie ever. Critics have considered the film to be the seminal movie of the nineties.

Goodfellas, screen played and written by Nicholas Pileggi was derived from a book named Wiseguy based on a true story of a mob informer, Henry Hill. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese, produced by Irwin Winkler, photographed by Michael Ballhaus, edited by Thelma Schoonmaker and distributed by Warner Bros. The film has not only proved to be a commercial success but also a quality success creating a hallmark as a crime thriller. Goodfellas
