A cell is the smallest functioning unit which can carry all the basic functions of life including growth, metabolism and reproduction. A British Scientist Robert Hookes had discovered the cell in 1665 and also gave the name cell. The theory of eukaryotic cell was proposed by Whittaker and Margulis in 1978.
