Social Learning Theory Applied Science Of Behavior


Social Learning Theory is an applied science that explains the way people learn behavior. It is fact that everybody learns by observing others when they act and react. Positive behavior begets imitating positive behavior. On the other hand, negative behavior gives birth of chaotic state of mind, always in confusion. The theory has been derived from the works of Gabriel Tarde.

The occurrence of social learning takes place through imitation of four major stages.The four stages of imitating in Social Learning Theory are close contact, imitation of superiors, understanding of concepts, role model behavior. Later, another pioneer person, Albert Bandura, in this field came with some modifications. Propositions of this theory by Albert Bandura has become the most acceptable and influential theory of learning and cognitive development.

As Bandura explained, he took help of a few traditional learning processes to build up his Social Learning Theory. He added that people can learn new information and behaviors as they watch other people in act. This is called observational learning. A wide range of behaviors can be explained using this kind of learning. Knowing the basic social learning concepts helps everybody to strengthen individual learning process.

Some basic concepts in his Social Learning Theory are People can learn through observation, Mental states are important to learning, Learning does not necessarily lead to a change in behavior. Bandura noticed three basic models in observational learning. The live model includes an actual individual who demonstrates or acts out a behavior. The verbal instructional model consists of descriptions and the related explanations of a behavior. The symbolic model has real or fictional characters on display of behaviors in online media, films, television programs or books.

In his Social Learning Theory, Bandura pointed out that the only factor to influence learning and behavior was not the kind of external or environmental reinforcement. Intrinsic reinforcement was a type of internal reward like satisfaction, pride and a sense of fulfillment. In this theory, learning process includes attention, retention, reproduction and motivation.

Social Learning Theory indicates deep interest in any subject as the key to attention. Related to attentive observational learning, one needs to retain the process and act accordingly whenever it is needed. The reproduction of the behavior needs natural practice that enhances the skills required and the sense comes from within. As a part of the continuous process of learning, a person needs to be motivated to keep the process on and the motivation comes after you observe the end result. Social learning theory
