Bible Ten Commandments Decalogue Set Of Moral Instructions
Bible Ten Commandments or the Decalogue are a set of religious and moral instructions that was given by God to Moses in the form of two tablets. According to Exodus 19:23 God pronounced these commandments on Mount Sinai but Deuteronomy 5:2 says it to be Mount Horeb. Though the commandments are regarded as the utterances of God, some passages in the Bible also refer to these as the writings of God on stone tablets. The commandments form an integral part of Christianity and Judaism.
The Bible Ten Commandments are also known as tablets of testimony or tablets of the covenant. God gave them to Moses who in turn gave them to the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. Returning to Mount Sinai Moses saw that the Israelites have shifted from the paths of God and had defiled themselves in the process; Moses in a feet of anger smashed and broke the tablets. God told Moses to carve two tablets to replace the earlier ones, which was placed in the Ark of the Covenant.
Opinions also vary regarding the arrangement of the Bible Ten Commandments in the tablets. Rabbi Hanina ben Gamaliel holds the opinion that each tablet contained five commandments but according to the Sages there were ten scribed on one tablet and ten on the other. Since the commandments are a covenant it is most likely that they would be replicated. Talmud is of the opinion that the tablets were written on both their sides which means that the carving on the stone may have gone through the full thickness to be visible on the other side.
There are hundreds of commandments included in the Torah that also include the ten from the Decalogue but they are not given any special significance when compared to the whole body of Jewish law. But at the same time the Bible Ten Commandments are recognized as an ideological basis for the other commandments. During the time of the Sanhedrin not following any one of six of the Ten Commandments implied death penalty, though this was rarely put to practice.
Both the Lutherans and Roman Catholics follow the order established by St. Augustine. The first three of the ten relate to mans relationship with God, four to eight about mans relationship to man and the last two are about private thoughts. All the divisions of Christianity taught that there are two aspects of the Bible Ten Commandments, an explicit negative aspect and an implied positive aspect.
Bible Ten Commandments refer to those thing which should be done but also refer to the things which should not be ignored. Though not explicitly mentioned in the Quran Islam too recognizes the commandments where the messages are similar to some of the verses in the Quran. Ten Commandments
