Bartender does the work of serving liquor or any other beverage in a bar, pub or tavern. This includes some kind of alcoholic beverages like beer, vodka, rum of whisky or non-alchoholic beverages like soft drinks, punches or mocktails. While they sometimes own the bar that they tend, sometimes, they may just be an employee.

In addition to serving beverages, they also receive payment from the bar customers and waiters. They have the additional responsibility of maintaining glassware, liquor and garnishes and some other supplies required in the bar. However, in some bar, barbacks help the bartender to perform these duties. Bars that serve cocktails expect them to mix the drinks efficiently and perfectly.

Bartender portrays the public image of the bar where they work as well as the ambience of the bar. In case they are inefficient and rude, it reflects negatively on the image of the bar and the ambience will not be an enjoyable one. However, in case they are efficient, friendly and helpful, the bar enjoys sufficient popularity among the frequent visitors.

Bartender does not have much role to play in establishments that focus mainly on the food. On the other hand, there are some places where bartender serves as the entertainer as well. They are expected to engage in entertaining activities like flair bartending as seen in movies like Coyote Ugly and Cocktail.

While in some bars, they are supposed to just serve and leave the visitors alone, in some cases they are supposed to act as listeners and offer counseling as well. In this manner, each bartender develops a regular set of clients who get accustomed to being tended by that particular person. They develop clienteles by remembering the favorite drinks of the customers and by listening to the customers problems and offering solutions at times

Bartender often recommends their clients regarding the local nightlife beyond the car, especially when the client is not from the city. They often give answers regarding various issues like sports, direction to other popular places and other forms of entertainment. They largely depend on tips for additional income in places where tipping is the norm. They also have the additional responsibility of assuring that the customers they serve are of the legal drinking age.

In some states in United States, they are supposed to have a certificate as a condition for being employed in a bar. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides details regarding their job requirements. This bureau also gives information regarding the employment criteria, earning statistics and opportunities for advancement. A study conducted by them concluded that Montana is the only U.S. state where over 1% of the working population serves as a bartender. Bartender
