Goitre Disease Of Swelling Thyroid In Neck

Sometimes it is viewed that in human beings a certain swelling appears in the neck just below Adam's apple or larynx as a result of an enlarged thyroid gland. In medical term this is known as a goitre (BrE), or goiter (AmE) in Latin. It is also known as a bronchocele.

Goitre has been classified into the following types. There is the diffuse goitre or a type of goitre that has spread through the entire thyroid. It can be a simple goitre, or a multinodular goiter.The other type is the Toxic goitre that refers to goitre with hyperthyroidism. These emerge as a result of Graves disease but sometimes happen due to inflammation or a multinodular goiter.

Nontoxic goitre is another type associated with normal or low thyroid levels and refers to all other types, which are caused by lithium or certain other autoimmune diseases. The struma can be classified into three types like the palpation struma found when palpating. In a normal posture of head it does not get visible. The second type classifies it in a struma that is palpative and can be easily seen. The third one is a large struma and is normally retrosternal

Iodine is an important compound necessary for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine also known as T3 and T4. In case of iodine deficiency endemic goitre is produced. As a result of low thyroid hormones, the pituitary gland releases thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH. Thyroid stimulating hormone acts to enhance synthesis of T3 and T4. However it also causes the thyroid gland to enlarge by increasing cell division.Women generally fall prey to the formation of goitre.

This includes the various other types of goitre caused by autoimmune problems.At an early stage when the goitre is small treatment may not be necessary. Often with a small treatment the size of the goiter reduces by a substantial amount. Removal becomes absolutely necessary if the goiter causes difficulty in breathing or swallowing. Obstructions can be removed by Radioiodine therapy. It is normally used with or without the pre-injection of a synthetic thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH.

But removing the thyroid is absolutely necessary to remove the goitre. But the complete removal of the thyroid gland terminates the ability to produce thyroid hormone by the body. In this case, oral thyroxine supplements are given to avoid the harm caused by hypothyroidism.Goiter
