Geraldine Page Academy Award And Tony Award Winning Actress


Geraldine Sue Page was an Academy Award winner actress. She was considered as one of the greatest actresses of all times. She was the master craftswoman who used to bring out the inner details of the characters she played. She also won Golden Globe and Tony Award. She starred in more than two-dozen feature films. This actress was also known for her contribution to theatre.

Geraldine Page was born on November 22, 1924 in Kirksville, Missouri. She used to go to Goodman Theatre Dramatic School in Chicago and studied acting under Uta Hagen. At the age of seventeen she began appearing in stock.

Geraldine Page worked closely with Lee Strasberg. She was a trained method actor. She acted opposite Paul Newman in playwright Tennessee Williams drama Sweet Bird of Youth. For this play she was nominated for Tony Award for the first time.

In this plays film adaptation Newman and Geraldine Page starred and she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the film. Geraldine acted in the Broadway production The Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov in 1964. She also acted in Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer in 1967. This play was the debut of both Michael Crawford and Lynn Redgrave in Broadway.

Geraldine Page received her second Tony nomination for Absurd Person Singular. In 1982 she acted in another successful Broadway production Agnes of God in 1982. She received Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress.

In 1985 Geraldine Page returned to Broadway production with Noel Cowards Blithe Spirit. She was again nominated for Tony Award. She won Sarah Siddons Award in 1960 for her work in Chicago theatre.

The film debut of Geraldine Page was Out of the Night in 1947. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In her small cinema life she got eight Academy Award nominations. At last she won the Oscar in 1986 for her extraordinary performance in The Trip to Bountiful. She got a standing ovation from the audience while receiving the award.

Geraldine Pages other roles that included Academy-Award-nominated performances are in the movies such as Summer and Smoke in 1961; Sweet Bird of Youth (1962); Toys in the Attic (1963); and Woody Allens Interiors (1978).

Geraldine Page starred in the 1969 film Whatever Happened to Aunt Allice. She also starred In The Beguiled (1971), The Day of the Locust (1975), and Nasty Habits (1977). She also did several TV shows and was the voice actress of Madamme Medusa in Disney animated film The Rescuers and Mickeys Christmas Carol.

Geraldine Page was married to Alexander Schneider in 1954. In 1963 she married for the second time to actor Rip Torn and remained married until her death. They had three children. She died of a heart attack in 1987. Geraldine Page
