Chinese Food is one of the most sought–after food in the world today. Chinese noodles, soya preparations, szechuan rice are hot favorites everywhere. This article informs about the Chinese food their eating habits and the health scenario of China. Chinese food has made its mark in the international cuisine scenario.

Chinese food consists mainly of rice or any other source of carbohydrate as the staple food along with vegetables, fish and meat as accompaniments. Noodles and mantau are also consumed as stable food. In north China wheat is also consumed largely, whereas in South China rice is consumed at large. Soup is served before main course in north China and after the main course in south China. The vegetables, meat and doufu are cut into pieces conveniently sized for biting.

Culturally rice is not served as a part of Chinese food on occasions that are very formal. If it is, then it is served just for formality in the form of fried rice. The rice is served individually but the other dishes like fish and vegetables are served from a common bowl, one bite at a time. Fish is cooked as a whole and served in a common bowl, from where people take their share. Fish is served as a whole, because wholeness is believed to symbolize completeness in life.

Chicken is cut into pieces and when served all the parts along with the head and second stomach are served. This is also done to symbolize wholeness. The Chinese food that vegetarians eat consists of sprouts, pok choy, shiitake mushrooms, and soy preparations. Sweets are served generally at the end of dinners on special occasions. Sweetly flavored soups or a fruit assortment form desserts.

Chilled foodstuff is not considered to be compatible with hot foodstuff health-wise and hence cold drinks and ice cream are not generally served as desert. But at present times chilled food is served at some places. Hot tea is considered to digest oily food. Hot pot is a favorite. The Chinese herbal diet concepts, like four natures, influence the Chinese food habits.

The bowls in which Chinese food is served are called Chopsticks that are traditionally made of wood. Food is served with spoons that are flat at the bottom. Now ceramic has replaced wood and at present bamboo and plastic are also used. The history of Chinese utensils shows usage of silver and ivory. A knife and fork is not used traditionally, because they are considered as arms.

According to the UNFAO, in 2000-2002, China has 11% malnourished population. The country receives food aid. According to the World Food Program, China got agricultural self-sufficiency in 1991. Malnutrition is due to rare or limited intake of fats, meat and sugar. But now with the inclusion of these items in Chinese food, health ailments like obesity and cardiac problems are on the rise.
