Singing in the Rain Musical Comedy With Gene Kelly

Singing in the Rain is a comedy film that was released in 1952. it offers a light-hearted look at the transition of Hollywood from the era of silent films to talkies. The film was ranked by the American Film Institute on the top of its list of 100 Years of Musicals and was also ranked fifth on its list of the greatest American films ever made.

The film Singing in the Rain revolves around a big star of silent films Don Lockwood who befriends a simple but talented chorus girl Kathy Selden. In the meantime the winds of change are sweeping through Hollywood and the studio boss R.F. Simpson announces to Lockwood and his leading lady Lina Lamont, that their forthcoming release, The Dueling Cavalier will have to be a talkie .

The producers are then forced to deal with a series of problems, especially the matter of the Lina Lamonts comically grating voice. Eventually Don and his friend Cosmo Brown succeed in persuading R.F to turn the film into a musical titled The Dancing Cavalier and in dubbing Linas lines with Kathys voice. The film Singing in the Rain reaches a dramatic high point when Lina discovers the plans and is further infuriated at the producers plans to give Kathy screen credit.

Lina does her best to destroy any chances of Kathys screen success and even attempts to nip the budding romance between Kathy and Don. However, at the premiere of the new talkie film the truth is revealed and Kathy gets her due as the real star of the film while Lina is forced to flee in shame. The film Singing in the Rain ends with the lovers Don and Kathy achieving personal as well as professional fulfillment.

The main attraction of the film was the song Singing in the Rain to which Gene Kelly danced joyfully while splashing in the puddles. The song was written by Arthur Freed and set to music by Nacio Herb Brown. It has been since sung by many artists and one of the most poplar versions has been that of Cliff Edwards.

The primary cast of the film Singing in the Rain included Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood and Debbie Reynolds as Kathy. Other roles were played by Donald OConnor, Jean Hagen and Millard Mitchell. The film was directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly with the latter also directing the choreography. Singin' in the Rain
