The BPM 37093 is known to be the biggest diamond out in this world. The Beatles knew this fact but astronomers who found it directly above Australia confirmed the fact. It is speculated to be the biggest diamond in the universe for that fact. It lights up the sky just like another star but little did we know what seemed as a mere rock is actually a diamond.
US astronomers at the Harvard Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics say that the BPM 37093 is actually a white dwarf star in the constellation of Centaurus, which is adjacent to the Southern Cross. The rock has been found to be 3000 kilometers wide with a core of crystallized carbon better known as diamond. It is an astounding piece of mystery and surpasses everyones imagination. It is by far the greatest discovery in the field of Astronomy.
The BPM 37093 weighs in around 2.27 thousand trillion tones thats approximately 10 billion trillion carats which is basically 1 followed by 34 zeroes. The largest diamond present in the world is the one in the British Crown which was originally from India known as the Kohinoor diamond and it is a mere 530 carat Star of Africa. The star took billions of years in the making and it is speculated to be very rare and unique.
The BPM 37093 is actually hidden beneath a layer of hydrogen and helium gases. The core of the star is actually the diamond, which is between 50 to 90 percent of its total mass. Astronomer Travis Metcalfe and his team of researchers found this dwarf star and studied it for eight years before concluding the fact that it was a diamond. Some fans of the Beatles named it Lucy as a tribute to the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
The theory of a diamond in the sky originated in the 60s; when scientists thought that the cool white dwarf should definitely have a diamond core. A white dwarf star actually is similar in size to our sun. They become a dead star when they lose all their nuclear fuel. The BPM 37093 is a variable white dwarf of the DAV or ZZ Ceti type. It has a mass of approximately 1.1 times that of the sun. It is 50 light years from the sun.
The thermonuclear fusion of helium nuclei in the triple alpha process is the primary cause of the high amount of carbon and oxygen in the BPM 37093. Diamonds consists of crystallized carbon therefore the star has a body center of lattice crystallization as all white dwarfs do. The star is surrounded by a Fermi sea of electrons within a cubic lattice of carbon and oxygen nuclei. It is by far said to be the mother of all diamonds.
