It took Fonzworth Bentley few years to leave the shadow of a personal assistant to celebrity Sean Diddy Combs and reincarnate as the popular hip-hop artist, entertainer, and fashion designer Fonzworth Bentley.

Fonzworth Bentley was born on February 13, 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia. His original name was Derek Watkins. He did his high school from North Atlanta High School. He graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Thereafter he attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. His cousin, Jonathan Watkins plays the drums at Auburn University and his younger brother, Dion, recently graduated with film making from University of Southern California

Fonzworth Bentley grew up in a musical ambience where his uncle, a band director, used to play Beethoven's 5th Symphony to him when he was only 18 months old. Fonzworth Bentley left Polo and came to New York and started as an apprentice for designer Alan Flusser. Later he joined a New York restaurant as maitre d. Watkins later reconsidered this decision and chose to make a career in the entertainment industry. That was the time when Combs hired him as his personal assistant. After working for Combs for two years Watkins resigned in 2002 and moved forward to pursue a career in acting. He appeared in several music videos namely P. Diddy's D.I.D.D.Y., OutKast's The Way You Move, Usher's Yeah and again with Outkast's in their International Player's Anthem.

When West, DJ Khaled, John Legend and Consequence made the music video Grammy Family, Fonzworth Bentley also featured in it. Again in August 2006, Bentley was cast in Sprite's Sublymonal campaign. In 2007 Bentley joined KnowHow2GO the awareness campaign for the poor to join colleges. Fonzworth Bentley
