Children of Men Academy Awards Winning Alfonso Cuaron Film


Children of Men is a dystopian science fiction film directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Claire-Hope Ashitey, and others the film deals with the world in 2027, when due to two decades of global human infertility, there is less than a century for humanity to survive and the world is filled with chaos.

The movie, Children of Men, begin in Britain in 2027. Due to the influx of illegal immigrants, the British army starts detaining all such people and the state becomes a militarized police state. At such a time, a television report announces that the last human born in the planet and the youngest human has been murdered in Argentina, when he declined to sign an autograph.

A former political activist turned bureaucrat named Theo Faron, played by Clive Owen is shown to be apathetic about the situation whereas the whole of London mourns on hearing the news. Children of Men then show a bomb exploding when he leaves a cafe and a terrorist organization is blamed for it. He visits his friend and on returning to London, is kidnapped by the terrorist group, Fishes, which is led by his estranged wife Julian Taylor, played by Julianne Moore.

A little African refugee girl named Kee is to be provided a travel permit and Theo is offered 5000 pounds for this. The story of the film, Children of Men, then shows Theo obtaining the permit from his cousin whos a government minister. Luke, a member of Fishes, Julian, Kee, Theo and Miriam, a midwife, set out on a trip to reach Kee to the Human Project. But Julian is killed in the journey and Kee discloses that she is pregnant and was supposed to be examined by a group of scientists, to cure the prevailing infertility.

To prevent the government from using Kee, Julian had planned to guide her to the Human project but, Theo finds out that Luke had killed Julian and wanted Kees child as their political tool. Theo, Miriam and Kee escape with Jaspers help who is then killed by Luke and his gang. The film, Children of Men, continues to show their struggle to escape and the Fishes attempt to capture them. The British army finally comes into the picture and rescues the child and mother. The future generation emerges in the form of the little child.

Loosely based on a novel written by P. D. James, Children of Men, the film was adapted by the director and writers. It was critically acclaimed and won 2 BAFTA Awards for best cinematography and production design, along with getting 3 Academy Award Nominations and won many awards like the Saturn award, AFC award etc. Children of Men
