1951 San Francisco Dons University Athletic Team

1951 San Francisco Dons have created a separate chapter in the history of the athletics team of the University of San Francisco. The athletic team of the San Francisco University was originally known as Grey Frog with their uniform of red and blue. Then the university was popular as Saint Ignatius College.

However, with the distinction in identity of the college from high school and later its development to the University of San Francisco in the year of 1927, the 1951 San Francisco Dons changed its uniform to green and gold.

The athletic team of the University of San Francisco became Don with the adoption of don as their mascot in the year of 1932. Apart from several other credits, 1951 San Francisco Dons created a separate credit in the consequent time with undefeated production of three NFL Hall of Famers. They went undaunted with Gino Marchetti, Ollie Matson as well as Bob St. Clair.

But unfortunately enough the 1951 San Francisco Dons could not receive any invitation of bowl events though there was a history behind it. The team refused to play without their two team mates who were black. In this way they missed their chance to compete in a much sensation creating bowl bead. The bowl bid was much needed at that time as the school was suffering from an associated financial burden.

Though the school might have been alleviated by the bowling bid raised by the finest football team of the University, the 1951 San Francisco Dons simply refused to nourish any kind of suggestions that showed them the way towards playing the game with two teammates left behind. The bowling games were not free from racialism at that time and thus, though being the finest football team, their position was last in Division I.

The 1951 San Francisco Dons finished the season with a 9-0 record as well as an average score of 33-8 that season prior to their refusal. The score, no doubt, was the best score if compared to any of the existing teams in the nation during that period. During this time they also gathered the courage to refuse the offer of bowling bid with an unfair stipulation kept before them.
