WVU Co Educational Public Research University


WVU is known as West Virginia University, which was established in the year 1867 as a land-grant university by the contribution of Morrill Act. Initially the name of this university was Agricultural College of West Virginia however the name was turned to WVU in the year 1868. It is a co-educational public research university located in Morgantown, WestVirginia in USA.

Other branches of this university comprises of West Virginia University at Parkersburg, West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery; Potomac State College of West Virginia University situated in Keyser. WVU was operated by the West Virginia University Board of Governors from the year 2001.

The total number of students were 28,113 at the end of the year 2007. It provides 179 majors in fifteen colleges and has made 25 Rhodes Scholars, which includes David C. Hardesty Jr., the president of WVU.

WVU has flourished into 16 schools and colleges namely College of Business & Economics, College of Engineering & Mineral Resources, School of Dentistry etc.The University operates a total number of seven libraries through out its campuses out of which one is located in Charleston and the rest are in Morgantown namely Law Library, Media Services, Health Sciences Library, Downtown Campus Library etc.

The libraries of WVU provides 1.5 million printed volumes, 2.3 million microforms, 10,000 journals as well as computers with huge speed of Internet facility. The collection of libraries are comprised of 30,000 books, 15,000 pamphlets, 4,500,000 manuscript documents and many more.

The logo of WVU is known as Flying WV. The fight song of the University is Hail, West Virginia, which was formed in the year 1915 by the University alumni Earl Miller as well as Ed McWhorter. The campus of Morangtown includes three sub-campuses. The head campus was known as the Downtown Campus, which is located in the Monongahela River valley in Morangtown.

The Health Sciences Campus, which is situated close to the Milan Puskar Stadium comprises the WVU Health Sciences Center, Ruby Memorial Hospital, Chestnut Ridge Hospital, Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, childrens hospital, eye hospital and many more. Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) was constucted in the year 1974 by Boeing in Morangtown, West Virginia.

PRT was developed in order to join the various diversified campuses of the WVU. The PRT was inaugrated by Tricia, who is the daughter of the U.S President namely Richard Nixon in the year 1975. It controls 16,000 rides every day with the help of 70 cars. The system covers the guideway of 8.7 miles, which is equal to 14 km along with five stations. To travel on PRT the travellor has to contribute a minimum amount of money at the station or they can also use their Mountaineer Card, which was also used as library card, school debit card as well as transit pass with no limit.
