Jesus Camp Rachel Grady Documentary
Jesus Camp is a documentary directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing. Made in 2006, it is about a Pentecostal summer camp. Pentecostalism, derived from Day of Pentecost, is a movement within Evangelical Christianity that emphasizes direct personal experience of God through baptism of Holy Spirit. The children in the camp are taught to practice their prophetic gifts and about taking back America for Christ.
The directors of Jesus Camp declares that the documentary doesnt come with any prepackaged point of view and tries at its best to be honest and impartial in depicting one of the factions of evangelical Christian community. The documentary is about the Kids on Fire School of Ministry summer camp run by Becky Fischer and Kids in Ministry International just outside Devils Lake in North Dakota.
Jesus Camp features three children, Levi, Rachel and Tory, who attended the camp in the summer of 2005. Levi dreams of becoming a Pastor and already has few preaching to his credit at his fathers church, Rock of Ages Worship Center in St. Robert, Missouri. He, like many other children at the camp is home-schooled and learns his physical sciences from textbook preaching Young Earth Creationism. He is in the camp with Rachel who is always praying and passing on Christian tracts to anybody she sees. Tory is the member of a dance team at Christ Triumphant Church and dances to the Christian Heavy Metal music. They all believe in charisma and the churches that show no such signs are dead churches according to them.
Becky Fischer deliberates on children keeping themselves purified to be in the army of God. She believes that only the children have the power to turn around America towards conservative Christianity. She also believes that the Christians should train their in religious warfare. In one scene of Jesus Camp it is shown that Lou Engle, the chief prophet for Harvest International Ministries urging the children to fight to end abortion in America. She urges the President to appoint righteous judges and the children are shown chanting righteous judges, righteous judges, at the end of the sermon.
Jesus Camp was accused of being a propaganda film and manipulating children to show evangelical Christianity in an unflattering light. It has also been accused of demonizing the evangelists and bringing them at par with radicalized Islam. Fischer declared in 2006 that she would be shutting down the camp indefinitely as the film has generated much negative feeling.
Jesus Camp was rated three stars out of four by Michael Smith of the Tulsa World as well as Jessica Reaves of the Chicago Tribune. According to David Edelstein the film is a frightening, infuriating, yet profoundly compassionate documentary about the indoctrination of children by Evangelical right. It was nominated for the Documentary Feature Award at the 79th Annual Academy Award in 2007. Jesus Camp
