Hank was a left-handed batter, who played with the Kansas City Monarchs in the years 1943, 1946-48, St. Louis Brownsin 1947 and New York Giants from 1949-56. He was well liked by his teammates and the Giants' fans as he possessed a powerful throwing arm that covered the outfield with grace.

He was a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and played football in college at Alabama A&M, by becoming the Pittsburgh Steelers fourth-round draft pick in 1974. From 1974 through 1987 he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 14 seasons. To give the Steelers unusually potent pass-receiving tandems, the 6-2, 191-pound speedster teamed first with Lynn Swann and then later with Louis Lipps.
