Brittany France Peninsula


Brittany was earlier an independent kingdom and duchy. In the earlier times it was also known as Lesser Britan. As per the survey of 2005, there were estimated 4,271,000 inhabitants of the region.

Brittany is a large peninsula that lies to the northwestern part of France which has the English Channel to its north and the Bay Of Biscay to its south. The total land area is 34,034 km². The regin has five departments : To the western side lies the Finistere, while in the northern edge is Côtes-d'Armor. Ille-et-Vilaine is located to the north eastern region while Loire-Atlantique is situated in the south eastern region. Morbihan is located in the middle.

Today Britanny is visited by many tourists mainly due to its megalithic monuments that can be seen in different areas of the peninsula. Very little is known about the purpose of these monuments, and speculations are still on by the local people related to their existance. To entertain the many tourists there are several resorts located mainly in the southern coast of the region. Some of the popular resorts of the region are La Baule, Belle Île and Gulf of Morbihan.

The official language of the region is French. There are two other regional languages also that are specific to different regions. Breton is considered to be the strongest in west, while Celtic Language is spoken mostly in the eastern side. Brittany is also visited and remembered for the number of calvalries that are well carved sculptures and crucifixation scenes. These form important souvenirs for many tourists, who love to take these artistic works back home. These are usually found in many church yards of villages and smaller towns.

Britany experiences a warm and a temperate climate. Rainfall is regular, that helps to maintain the greenery of many sides of the region. During the summer months the temperatures are quite high, anc can reach 30 degrees Celsius, but remain comfortable compared to parts of France south of the Loire. The climate in the region is quite pleasant and comfortable all round the year.

In the earlier times, as per history Brittany was split in two modern region of present France. 80% of Brittany has become the région of Bretagne, while the rest of the 20% of Brittany is known to have been grouped with other historical provinces. These regions that have been grouped include Anjou and Maine so that a new region can be created. Brittany
