
The romantic comedy film When Harry Met Sally is based on a story written by Nora Ephron that has Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as Harry and Sally respectively as the main cast. It is a 1989 American film written by Nora Ephron, and directed by Rob Reiner and produced by Andy Scheinman.
The film When Harry Met Sally starts in 1977 when the main characters Harry Burns and Sally Albright meet in a carpool ride from Chicago University to New York. During the trip they discuss about man-woman relationship and sex playing a part in it. According to Harry a man and a woman cannot be friends without sex getting in the way but Sally believes that a platonic relation between the two is possible. This argument continues throughout the major part of the film for in the next 12 years while meeting eaach other by accident.During this time both of them were in relationships with other people but somehow that did not work out and eventually Harry and Sally realise their love for each other and get married in the end. The basic theme of the movie is highlighted by the question which Harry asks Sally, can a man and a woman just be good friends.
In the movie When Harry Met Sally the scene which steals the show is the one in which Sally claims that a man is unable to recognise a woman faking orgasm and to prove her point she shows her skill of faking orgasm in fill public view in Katzs Deli in Manhattan while having lunch with Harry. Seeing Sally doing that a patron who was nearby instantly places her order saying that she will have what Sally is having in lunch. Columbia Pictures initially in a few selected cities released the film and gradually word of mouth publicity generated interest, which led to the expansion of distribution. On July 21, 1989 the film was released widely and in the opening weekend the film grossed a total of $8,846,522 in 775 theatres.
The film When Harry Met Sally got an Oscar nomination apart from a British Academy Film Award and a Writers Guild of America Award for best screenplay. It was also nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards. Meg Ryan got the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Comedy/Musical for this film. The critics reviewed the movie quite positively. Reiner was hailed as one of the very best directors of comedy while Ephron got appreciation from all quarters for her original screenplay. The on screen chemistry between Crystal and Ryan was superb.
