The Legend of Bagger Vance is a film based on the novel by Steven Pressfield. Acclaimed director Robert Redford made interesting changes to the movie's storyline. While the novel had a mythical context of Bhagabvad Gita, the movie's narrative centers around the US state Georgia. The similarity between the novel and Gita is pointed out in a book by the Hinduism scholar Steven Rosen.
The Legend of Bagger Vance has been produced by Jack Eberts and Robert Redford. The screenplay was penned by Jeremy Leven. Both Dreamworks and 20 th Century Fox came together for the movie's distribution.
The Legend of Bagger Vance tells the story of one Rannuplh Junuh and his girlfriend Adele Invergordon. Junuh, a once-gifted golfer, grows defeatism due to the shocking experience of fighting in the World War 1. Adele tries one last chance to regain her family name by starting a golf resort and a tow-day exhibition match between the ace golfers Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. But to get the enthusiasm of the local people, she needs one player from the locality. She persuades Junuh to play once more.
The Legend of Bagger Vance then brings Bagger Vance, who out of the play comes to Junuh to be his caddy. Vance's moral support not only boosts up Junuh's love of the game but also adds charm to his love life. In a one crucial point, Junuh pays no heed to Vance's words and hits the ball in to a forest. His performance deteriorates. Moreover in the forest, the terrorizing memory of the world war brought back to him.
The Legend of Bagger Vance helps Junuh to get him composed and focused on the game. Slowly, Junuh regains his maturity and at the 18 th hole, Vance decides to leave Junuh as the latter has become much more matured. Though, Junuh has a chance to be the winner, he sinks a putt to have a tie with Jones and Hagen. During the match, Vance has an assistant named Hardy Greaves who continues to be the caddy of Junuh. The narrative maintains a circularity as both the beginning and the end show aged Hardy playing golf. The end shows Vance meeting with Hardy.
The Legend of Bagger Vance has Will Smith in a fascinating role of Bagger Vance/ Krishna. Besides it has Matt Damon as Junuh/ Arjuna, Charlize Theron as Adele Invergordon, Bruce McGill as Walter Hagen, Joel Gretsch as Bobby Jones, and Lane Smith as Grantland Rice.
