Disney World is a great place to go on a family trip. Disneyland, owned by the legendary Walt Disney Company was opened in Anaheim, California in 1955. Walt Disney himself was not happy with the ambience that slowly developed around the Disneyland site. He and his team were searching for a much bigger place to build a second resort to supplement the first one. This was their dream project in terms of magnitude as well as variety.
Disney World cast members remarked that Disney wanted the vast land so that visitors can get lost in their dreams far away from the enigma of the real world. A common story doing its round is the story of a family that saw the traffic jams on the Santa Ana Freeway from the Skyway ride and hastily left the Disneyland.
With this dream as goal the Disney World or Walt Disney World Resort was created as the largest and most visited entertainment park in the world. It consists of four theme parks and a lot of theme-hotels. Apart from these there are a number of shopping, dining, entertainment and recreation sites. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts segment of The Walt Disney Company, located in Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake, Florida owns and looks after the management of the park.
The day John F. Kennedy was assassinated Walt Disney w as inspecting the Orlando site in 1963. He initially appealed to Florida city council for building Disney World in Sanford but he was refused. The citizens of Sanford were apprehensive about the criminal activities that tourism will invite. But Disney realized the potential of the area as he saw the concrete network of roads and the McCoy Air Force Base that was later named as Orlando International Airport. But before his vision was realized he died on December 15th 1966.
After Walt Disney's death construction began in 1967 and Disney World was opened to the visitors on October 1, 1971.Of the four theme parks the Magic Kingdom theme park was the first to open on the inaugural day. Second in line were Epcot on October 1, 1982, Disneys Hollywood Studios on May 1, 1989 and Disney's Animal Kingdom on April 22, 1998. Roy O. Disney, Walts elder brother completed the work and dedicated it to the name of his brother officially announcing it as Walt Disney World.
