
Dateline NBC or the Dateline is a newsmagazine. Actually its a weekly television magazine that is broadcast by NBC and is hosted by Ann Curry. The show time is of 60 minutes. This program is being aired since March 31st, 1992. The show is similar to that of ABCs 20/20 or CBSs 60 minutes.
The history of Dateline NBC dates back to 1992 when it started at the NBC studio 3K, which was earlier used by the NBC Nightly News. Dateline NBC got its new set when The Today Show went on to its current sidewalk studio. Dateline NBC is also like other magazines. The magazine greatly emphasizes on Investigative Journalism, true crime and human interest stories, etc.
Some of Dateline NBCs common segments are Dateline: Survivor. In this segment a person talks about their near death experience and rescue. Dateline Timeline is another popular segment where a popular product, person, and music single are played and viewers are invited to guess what year it appeared in. The State of the Art segment explains how something was technically accomplished in a movie while Consumer Alert is where common consumer complaints or issues, such as food safety, are investigated, and Newsmakers comprise of light interviews with major figures in politics, entertainment, and business, as well as regular people in the news.
The Dateline NBC on Saturday nights features the true crime stories. It even comprises the To Catch a Predator. The Dateline banner is also used for broadcasting certain NBC news specials. Dateline NBC has been into certain controversies like Quixtar incident in 2004 where the Dateline came out with a report accusing the Quixtar Independent Business Operators of making money illegally. General Motors case which put forward an investigative report on poor design of fuel tanks, for which GM sued the NBC who later had to apologize.
The Trapping Story Targets was another controversial incident of the Dateline NBC where an article cataract cowboys claimed that doctors perform unnecessary surgery on people who are old. St. Louis Helicopter Hijack Attempt where the NBC employees posed as terrorists, on being caught by the FBI they revealed their identity and said that they wanted to bring to light the failure in the general aviation airport security.
Dateline NBCs To Catch a Predator has been criticized because it makes news rather than reporting news. It was created to catch the people who do internet conversations with law enforcement officials identifying themselves as teenagers.
In Dateline NBCs trial to catch a predator one man committed suicide (2007) and this show has been often criticized for this. NBC is also available in Canada, and MSNBC. NBC News programs are broadcasted on the 24 hour news network Orbit News in Europe and the Middle East. It includes Dateline NBC and several other shows. Not only this, it has also been seen on the Seven Network in Australia.
