Savannah Georgia Biggest County In Chatham


The biggest city in the County of Chatham, the county seat of Savannah, Georgia occupies an area that is more than 200 square kilometers. The city is well populated, the metropolitan area estimated at having had above 320,000 citizens in the year 2006. The 2005 census of the USA settled the estimated total population in the city at around 128,500. It is also historically significant for having been the first colonial capital in the city of Georgia.

The terrain of Savannah, Georgia is situated only 15 meters above the sea level. It is marshy and flat, especially due to its proximity to the river Savannah, on whose banks the city is situated. It should be noted that it is the principal port on the same river and is also connected through the Intracoastal Waterway of the U.S. The tendency of this region to get flooded has necessitated the construction of several canals to minimize the hazard.

Savannah, Georgia harbors a population of persons having diverse ethnic origins. Apart from an African-American and White majority, other races including Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and Asians are also present as minorities. The economy has evolved in the course of time from an agriculture-based economy dependent on the production of indigo and silk for its revenue, to a more industrial base. Gulfstream Aerospace, a renowned aircraft manufacturer, is situated here.

Apart from the waterway, Savannah, Georgia has a strong infrastructural base in other forms of transport as well, including road and air transport. There is one international airport – the Hilton Head International. Several interstate highways, like the Interstate 95 located near the airport, link Savannah by the road. Other expressways also link this city with the rest of Georgia and the U.S.

Savannah, Georgia has a large number of places of interest for visitors. These include not just places of historical significance, but also modern shopping malls that are delights for tourists. Its architecture is internationally renowned. Moreover, Savannah has a reputation for being extremely hospitable. It also has a number of squares of varied significance and extent. This city also has the Telfair Museum of Art, known as the first art museum in the South of the U.S. Other historical landmarks include Fort Jackson, known for its connection with the Civil War in America.

However, the city of Savannah, Georgia is far from being the usual quiet town with a rich heritage. In fact, this city is as vibrant as any other. The Civic Center is known to host at least 900 events every year. Other than its urban zones, Savannah has coastal gardens, a bamboo farm and also several places of worship, including a Methodist church and an African-American Church. It is a city full of attractions for visitors and residents alike. Savannah Georgia
