Tuscany City Italy


Tuscany city of Italy is one of the most visited places in Europe due to its attractive physical landscape along with intense history, architecture and artistic works. It is one of the 20 regions of Italy located in Central Italy with a rocky terrain that is one fourth mountainous and two thirds hilly.

The capital of Tuscany city is Florence, which is one of the Tuscan localities protected by UNESCO. Along with this, the Cathedral of Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, Pienza and Valdorcia have been considered protected localities. Divided into 10 provinces, it has a total land area of 22,990 km2 and a population of 3,619,872 (2004).

Tuscany city is one of the most crowded tourist destinations with the main visiting season being the months of July and August. People visit such places as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the medieval festivals of Siena and Vinci, the birth place of Leonardo da Vinci. Significant contributions to the Renaissance have been made by people like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Dante etc. all hailing from this region.

Tuscany city is also known to export the Carrara marble, used by Michelangelo for the sculpture of David and others. Chianti supplies grapes for wine, while Lucca supplies olive oil. Light industry comprising of machinery manufacturing, metal working, plastics moulding and production and manufacturing of specialized electronic goods, also contributes to the economy of the region.

The area of Tuscany city was inhabited by the Appenine culture in the late 2nd millennium BC, before the Etruscans, who formed the 1st major civilization of this Italian region. Roman influences were evident in the civilization and later Rome established cities like Lucca, Pisa, Siena and Florence. In the medieval period, wealth and development came along the region as traveling pilgrims between Rome and France, took shelter in this region.

The Renaissance movement was believed to have started in Tuscany city of Italy and in the modern era, the rulers of Florence, the Medicis, created Tuscany in the 1400s. It was then transferred to the Holy Roman Emperor which was dissolved by Napoleon and the Austrian empire took over. With the wars of independence, it was transferred to the newly unified nation of Italy in the 1850s. At present, the political scenario is dominated by the center-left coalition, The Union. Chinese, North African and also a large number of British and American immigrants can be found in the region. Tuscany
