Visigoth Goths Tribe

Visigoth is a section of the Goths that segregated itself from the Ostrogoths. Along with the Ostrogoths, this tribe executed several raids on the upcoming Roman provinces during the period during the period of transition into the Early Medieval Period. The Goths were part of this migration, along with several other tribes including the Vandals, collectively referred to as barbarians by the Roman civilization.

It is assumed that the Visigoth section of the Goths secluded itself from the original tribe of the Goths in around 4th Century A.D. Historical sources suggest that these were one of the two principal divisions of the Goths that arose at this point of time. It is also known that they were originally the inhabitants of Dacia as agriculturists. This location of their settlement is situated in present Romania.

It is generally held that the reason why the Visigoth tribe migrated out of their original settlement is the invasion of the Huns. The precise date when the Huns attacked them is believed to be the year 376 A.D. It is known that the Migration Period had also witnessed successive attacks made by the Huns.

In the opinion of a bureaucrat named Jordanes living in the 6th Century A.D., the Gothic tribe named Tervingi in Emperor Maximians eulogy is none other than the Visigoth tribe itself. They are also referred to as the Vesi, Wesi, Wisi or Visi. These words in Gothic mean noble people or good people. Another opinion is that Cassiodorus coined this term, intending to signify West Goths.

Germanic in their origin, the Visigoth tribe was the first tribe to migrate into territory under the Roman Empire. They initially sought the sanctuary of the Roman Empire owing to the attacks made on them by the Huns. The Roman Empire initially showed tolerance towards them. However, the condition imposed by the Empire was that the tribe should defend the Roman frontier on the Danube.

A Visigoth rebellion against the Roman Empire ensued shortly. Ultimately, Italy witnessed their powerful invasion and Rome fell in 410 A.D. This strike, led by Alaric I, shook the Roman Empire to the core. The tribe, now having gathered power, made a stable settlement in the Iberian Peninsula. More specifically, they established their territory in sections of Spain and Gaul (modern France). These settlements were powerful kingdoms destined to last for two centuries.

The Visigoth kingdom was settled with Toulouse at its centre, after king Euric compelled the Roman Empire to give the tribe absolute freedom. The centre of their power was soon transferred to Barcelona, and eventually to Toledo. There is surviving evidence of their rich culture. For example, their forum judicum (Code of Law), art and architecture are still preserved. Visigoths
