Central Michigan Heritage Institution


Situated in Mount Pleasant in Michigan in the United States, the Central Michigan University is a co-educational state university having a populace of about 28,000 students. Also known as the CMU, the university, which is the fourth largest university in Michigan, has off-campus sites in 15 states and 10 countries.

In an endeavor to have better-trained teachers in the state, officials opened up the Michigan Normal School on September 13, 1892. This school was renamed as the Central State Teacher's College in 1927. In 1941, it further underwent a name change and became the Central Michigan College of Education. Central Michigan College became its name in 1955 and finally in 1959, it got its present name.

The Central Michigan University has eight academic divisions that award 27 degrees including bachelors, masters, specialists and doctoral degrees. The divisions include The College of Business Administration, The College of Communication and Fine Arts, The College of Education and Human Services, The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions, The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, The College of Science and Technology, The College of Graduate Studies, and The College of Chippewa Tribes. It offers a wide range of choices in 25 areas for students to pick their choice. While undergraduates can select from more than 3,000 classes in 150 programs, graduate students have to make their choice from 60 programs. The university has also been offering a MBA program for selected employees of the Defense Contract Audit Agency for quite some time now.

In the Central Michigan University there is the Charles V. Park Library, situated within the university campus is of great assistance to students with its stock of a million books and enough place to seat 2,655 patrons at a time. The College of Chippewa tribes has its athletics programs affiliated to the NCAA Division I-A and regularly takes part in the Mid-American Conference. The colors of the college are maroon and gold. The alumni of the college are often popularly referred to as Chips with prior approval of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, which resides in the vicinity of the college. This tribe has a good relationship with the university.

Central Michigan University is an institution of repute. Not only in academics has the university had a good record in sports too. In 1974, the football team of the university won the second NCAA Division II national championship by defeating the University of Delaware. The winning team was voted as the national champion in the Associated Press College Division poll. Central Michigan University
