Robert Olen Butler Junior was born on the 20th day of January in the year 1945 in Granite City, in the state of Illinois of the United States. His father was a renowned actor. He held the post of the chairman of the theatre department of the Saint Louis University. His mother too, was an executive officer. Thus Robert was born among a very dignified family. Driven by the passion which he inherited from his father, he sought admission in Northwestern University with majors in theater.

However, Robert Olen Butler soon realized that he was finding more interest in writing and soon switched over to the University of Iowa in order to study playwriting. In the mean time offer arrived for him to join the US Army and he took it. He was on duty during the Vietnam War from the period of 1969 to 1971. At first he was given the post of counter-intelligence special agent for the Army and then worked as a translator.

Robert Olen Butlers sincerity to his job soon promoted him up to the rank of a sergeant in the Armys Military Intelligence Corporation. His dedication towards the job earned him the title of the Tu Do Chinh Kien Award. After leaving the Army he worked in several other small scale jobs like Steel Mill laborer, taxi driver, a substitute teacher in a high school and so on. However, none of them pleased his heart and mind.

Tired of wondering about job, Robert Olen Butler finally decided to dedicate the rest of his life towards writing. He joined the Fairchild Publications. He then started writing novels. The first novel was The Alleys of Eden, published in the year 1981. It deals with a story of a man who decides to stay back in Vietnam rather than returning to his homeland. In 1983, he published his next novel Sun Dogs.

Besides writing novels, Robert Olen Butler also made significant contributions in the short story writing. Other than writing about 240 short stories, Robert has also written plays like the Severance that became largely popular among the people at that time.

However, Robert Olen Butlers stories written on science fiction were the ones that earned him the greatest amount of popularity. His knowledge of science mixed with the power of imagination had made those books acceptable to all the people who had a fantasy towards science fiction. Robert Olen Butler
