Canouan Island Of St Vincent

Birthplace of former Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Sir John Compton, Canouan Island is one of the Grenadines Islands belonging to St Vincent. It is a small and dry island measuring about 3.5 miles by 1.25 miles. Its capital village, which is its only village, is Charlestown. NBA player and political activist, Adonal Foyle also belongs to this island.

Canouan Island has a barrier reef running along the Atlantic side of the island. It is outlined with rounded hills beneath the Maho, a 900-foot tall Mount Royal, which is, ascertained as the highest point on the island. The southern side of the Island is separated by two bays, Glossy and Friendship. This beautiful Island is located just 25 miles south of St. Vincent, who in 1871 to 1969 was part of the British colony of the Windward Islands.

History proves that more than 200 years before Christ, a cultivated tribe called the Arawaks arrived on the island in bunker canoes. These new residents inhibited the Canouan Island and brought fire-burners, plants and animals, basic farming and fishing skills with them. They lived in peace for around 1500 years until a ferocious tribe of fierce fighters called the Caribs invaded and spread killing and massacre all over. They killed Arawaks and took their women off.

Around 200 years after Columbus, the Europeans established a sort of permanent settlement. As a result of the Canouan Islands mountainous and densely forested geography, the Caribs initially defended Europeans settlement here longer than on almost any other island in the Caribbean. After the Caribs got defeated on other islands they joined slaves, who had managed to escape repression on Barbados along with those who had survived shipwrecks near St. Vincent and Bequia.

The mixed origins of the island warriors and the freed Africans, with their common distrust, wrath and frustrations for the Europeans, became a fearsome enemy. The Caribs apprehended complete control so they negotiated with the French to construct a settlement on the island in 1719. The French also brought slaves to work their plantations. By the year 1748, St. Vincent a Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle officially declared impartial by Britain and France. In 1979, the Canouan Island became independent with a secure democratic government based on the British system.

In the year 2004, Raffles began managing the Raffles Resort on the Canouan Island which occupies 1/3 of the island. This area was previously uninhabited. The resort has a golf course, casino and 150 rooms hotel. Canouan is generally a peaceful place, with the exception of some fairly noisy and harsh-sounding local holidays. Canouan Island
