Skink Lizard Species

Skink is one of the most diversified forms of lizards that are found on the earth. Recent investigations have shown that as many as 1200 kinds of these animals are found all around the globe. They belong to the family named Scincidae.

Skink has many similar characteristics with other order in the family like Scincomorpha and the Lacertidae. This animal has a very good power of adaptability with the environment as a result of which they are so widespread around the world.

At one glance, it is very difficult to distinguish between a true lizard and a skink. It almost resembles the same physical features. However, if one looks a bit deeply, he would notice that this animal has slightly smaller legs as considered to a true lizard. Another striking feature of the animal is that its neck cannot be prominently distinguished from its tarsal part. It seems that the torso directly attached itself with the head.

Another striking feature of the skink is the fact that even the members belonging to the same species shows diversified characteristics. The size of the legs of this animal varies from one another. In some parts of the world this animal is seen to have a very short limb, while in other parts, the limbs are quite large. Another striking feature that differentiates this animal with other members of the lizard family is that they use their skin for their movement, more than their legs. Their movement resembles that of a snake.

Skinks generally grow up to a length of up to 12 centimeters, with the exception of a particular type, known as the Corucia, that are found in the Solomon Island. Corucia are known to grow to a length of about 35 centimeters. They generally are carnivorous animals, feeding on insects like crickets, grasshoppers, beetles and caterpillars. Spiders, earthworms, snails, slugs, isopods are also a part of their food. Some members of this species are also known to eat lizards.

As mentioned earlier, skinks are found all over the world. However, some of their species are on the verge of extinction due to the occupation of their lands by humans. These animals live in burrows and generally prefer to stay in it rather than on trees or under water. They are usually seen under the daylight as they come out in order to bask in the sun.
