Bastille Day National Holiday In France
The French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July 1789 that marked the beginning of the French Revolution, is known as the Bastille Day. It is called la Fête Nationale (National Holiday) in French, or more commonly le quatorze juillet (14th of July). During the reign of Louis the 16th's Ancient Regime, the Bastille was a prison and a symbol of the absolute and arbitrary power. By capturing this symbol, the people signaled that the king's power was no longer absolute: power should be based on the Nation and be limited by a separation of powers.
