James Garner Emmy Award Winner
James Scott Bum Garner the Emmy-award winning television actor now known as James Garner was born on April 7, 1928 in Norman, Okhlahoma. He is now seventy nine years old and has been ruling over several television series from about five decades. Some of his roles as Bret Maverick, in the popular 1950s western-comedy series are greatly appreciated.
James Garner was born to Mildred and Weldon Warren Bumgarner, a carpet layer and was the youngest of the three children. After he lost his mother who was part Cherokee, at a tender age of four Garner and his brothers lived with their relatives. When his father Weldon remarried Wilma, James Garner and his siblings were once again united with their family in 1934.
Wilma could not take care of Weldons children and would beat them ruthlessly especially young James and shortly their marriage ended. After this incident Weldon Bumgarner moved to Los Angeles while Garner and his brothers remained in Norman. After trying several jobs of which he disliked the most, at sixteen James Garner joined the United States Merchant Marine.
James Garner proved to be a good and efficient worker and easily got friendly with most of his co-workers. But here too he had to face obstracles as he suffered from chronic seasickness, Garner tried to adjust but could not continue with the work. Finally he came to Los Angeles and with his fathers help joined Hollywood High School, where he was selected as the most popular student.
His last name automatically changed from Bumgarner to Garner after the studio named him as James Garner without his permission. He married Lois Clarke after the birth of his first child. He had to legally change it as he was fascinated by the idea that she too will have many names. Jack, his brother also had an acting career thus he too changed his surname to Garner. Only Charlie, his another brother who was not into acting retained the Bumgarner surname.
James Garner played the role of Jim Rockford, in one of the most popular detective drama of the 1970s. He eventually starred in dozens of movies, including The Great Escape (1963) with Steve McQueen. Paddy Chayefsky's The Americanization of Emily (1964) and Blake Edwards' Victor/Victoria (1982), both with Julie Andrews. Murphy's Romance (1985) with Sally Field, for which Garner received an Academy Award nomination.
After forty feature film roles, including the smash hit Sayonara with Marlon Brando, James Garner got his big break playing the role of professional gambler Bret Maverick in the comedy Western series Maverick from 1957 to 1960. No one but Garner and series creator Roy Huggins thought the series could compete with The Ed Sullivan Show and The Steve Allen Show. Gradually Maverick eventually made James Garner now a household name.
James Garner was away from acting for a few years then again returned to his most popular TV role in 1981 in the revival series Bret Maverick. But surprisingly NBC canceled the programme after only one season inspite of his good ratings. Though Garner's performance as a 53-year-old Bret Maverick was almost universally applauded it was believed that most of the scripts were not as good as compared to the first series.
James Garner was an owner of the American International Racers (AIR) auto racing team from 1967 through 1969. His shops prepared ten 1969 SC/Ramblers for the Baja 500 race. James Garner was an avid golfer for many years and played in high school along with his brother Jack. In February 1990 at the AT&T Golf Tournament he won the Most Valuable Amateur Trophy. Imdb
