Stanczak Painter And Printmaker

Julian Stanczak is a well-known name in the field of art. He is a painter and printmaker who acquired his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Ohio in 1954. This talented artist was born in Borownica, Poland on November 5,1928.

Julian Stanczak was a victim of World War and at the beginning of World War II, Stanczak was forced into a Siberian labor camp. There he was subjected to a lot of tortures and as a result his right hand stopped functioning. Later in the year 1942 he escaped from the camp. He joined the Polish army-in-exile in Persia which however he soon deserted and spent some years in a Polish refugee camp in Uganda, Africa.

Julian Stanczak learned to paint with his left hand while he was at this camp and he soon moved to England. A few years later he moved to the US and now he stays in Cleveland in the US. This excellent artist had trained under Josef Albers and Conrad Marca-Relli. He had basically trained under them at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture, New Haven Connecticut. In fact it is from this school that he received his Master of Fine Arts in 1956.

Julian Stanczak had his first exhibition held in Martha Jackson Gallery in 1964. The exhibition, named as Julian Stanczak: Optical Paintings was a great success and established him as an artist. Consequently a few years later we see that his art has become a part of Museum of Modern Art's 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye.

Julian Stanczak has a typical pattern in his work. A significant feature in his work is that he can manage to vibrate the surface plane in his work by use of wavy lines and contrasting colors. This feature is best seen in his works for example Provocative Current 1965. In the later years we see that these painting gave way to more complex compositions. Thus as a result we see that in his paintings complex compositions constructed with geometric rigidity yet softened with varying degrees of color transparency such as Netted Green.

Stanczak is also an acclaimed art teacher. This master painter has worked as a teacher in the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Besides he has also worked as a Professor of Painting, Cleveland Institute of Art and at the same time the Educators of America also named him as the Outstanding American Educator. This was in the year of 1970. The artist has a typical style which is to repeat forms to create compositions. Often we see that all his forms are the manifestations of his visual experiences. For him art is an experience based on colors. Wikipedia
