De Illinois Undefined France Region

De Illinois country is the region that lies to the south west of Illionos, and was used by the French for the first time in 1673 as a settlement. There were no specific boundaries mentioned for this region. The area extended to the east towards the Allegheny Mountains and in the western fringe towards the Rocky Mountains. To the north of the region lies the Peoria and southern part was Arkansas Post.It was in this region that the Arkansas River flowed into the Mississippi River. At the present times, this place is known as American Bottom.

De Illinois was initially inhabited by French traders and missionaries, both dealing with Native Americans. Despite the importation of women to induce permanent settlement, the French were not very successful in encouraging settlement in the area. Few French convicts also became settlers.

De Illinois Country had a fort built that was considered to be the seat of government. During that time the state witnessed severe flooding, due to which in order to protect the town another fort was built. The newly built stone fort became the headquarters for the French De Illinois Country for less than 20 years.

Peoria was located at first in the southern part of New France.In the later times it was in the northern part of the French Colony of Louisiana, and in the later period western part of the newly formed United States. French interests were dominant at Peoria for well over 100 years, from the French explorers came up the De Illinois River. It was in the year1846, a small French presence existed at a time on the east bank of the river. However, in the recent times, nothing much remians..except the faint echoes of French Peoria that survive in the streets of the region.

As per a war strategy the French and Indian residents of De Illinois Country were given full citizenship. As per the Northwest Ordinance, certain residents of the region that included the French and Indian were granted specific exemptions.
