Prior to Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan released an original album in 1990s called Under the Red Sky. But it proved to be a commercial and critical disappointment. Throughout the 1990s, he released two albums of folk covers and a live album of older compositions. Bob said at that time that most of the songs written by him in that period were rejected by his mind right away. He felt as if he had written enough songs for his life.
Bob Dylan began writing for Time Out of Mind during the winter of 1996. he was stuck in snow in his farm in Minnesota and got inspired to write some wonderful songs. He later recorded them at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami, Florida. Bob chose Daniel Lanois as his producer, who had earlier produced Dylans 1989 album- Oh! Mercy. Bob described that his album is concerned with the tragic realities of life rather than the bright and rosy idealism which was prevalent in those days.
In the album, Time Out of Mind there are 11 original compositions, other 3 songs could not make the final cut. The album went to become a huge hit, although panned by some critics. They argued that the album lacked depth and that Bob did not push his voice beyond its limits.
After the release of the album, Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan suffered a serious heart infection called Pericarditis. It is an inflammation of the sac around the heart. This condition makes breathing very difficult. Bob had to cancel his forthcoming tour and he spent most of the June 1997, in acute pain.
