Major League Baseball Draft Players Recruitment


The prime method for Major League Baseball Draft has always been on recruiting baseball players from high schools and colleges. Basically an entirety of the amateur baseball clubs along with freshers is assigned. The first draft was held in 1965, it is always held in June. Its sheer size makes the drafts last for over 50 rounds and approximately 1502 players are selected. It has enormous media coverage due to the popularity of the game.

The Major League Baseball Draft concentrates on junior leagues to bring up new players and polish their skills. Most of the amateurs players get to make it to the first round picks. Only a handful makes it to the 6th round. Out of that only a few get to play in the MLB. For the first time in history the 2007 draft was televised live on June 7th. It took place in the Orlando, Florida.

Since 1921 the Major League Baseball Draft used this draft to assign minor league player. In 1936 the first draft was held for the amateur football. About 10 years later the NBA started drafting players in a similar way. The system of drafting was compared to slave markets, major teams declined the continuation of this method. Amateurs were free to sign up for any team before the introduction of the draft. This gave an upper hand to rich clubs.

The monopoly was in the hand of the richest clubs. They could choose the more talented players. Later a restriction was made to reduce player salaries. A player was a free agent if he was to be removed from the major league roster. The Major league Baseball Draft was held three times each year. First time in June, then in January and finally in August. Majority of the players came from high schools and colleges.

The Major League Baseball Draft had a major Economic impact. A record bonus of $205,000 for Rich Reichardt has been the highest signing bonus. Till 1979 no one received a higher bonus than Reichardt. Player salaries increased throughout the years. Bonuses over one-million dollars were reported during the 1980s. Rules during the 1990s prohibited high school draftees to attend college. Lawsuits were filed but no changes were made till date to the draft article.

Only US citizens are eligible for the Major League Baseball Drafts. Criteria suggest that all college draftees should have played there in the junior years. The players from colleges should be at least twenty one years to sign up in the draft. Community college players are eligible to be drafted at any time. Selections of players are made rapidly. A compensatory round occurs after the first round of the draft. It is also known as a sandwich round. Major League Baseball Draft
