Treasure Island Movie Disney Adaptation Of Robert Louis Stevenson Novel


The Robert Louis Stevensons novel, Treasure Island, was adapted by Disney in a 1950, Treasure Island movie. The film stars Bobby Driscoll, Robert Newton, Basil Sydney, Walter Fitzgerald and Denis ODea among the major characters. The film was directed by Byron Haskin and produced by Perce Pearce. The film is an action, adventure, swash buckler, exciting children movie.

The Treasure Island movie is a story of a young man, Jim Hawkins, who helps his mother in running the Admiral Benbowill, which is located in the outskirts of Bristol, England. One day they have a strange looking visitor called Billy Bones, who discusses about a hidden treasure in his drunken stupor. The man drops dead and Jim discovers a treasure map in the dead mans chest.

In the Treasure Island movie, Jim takes this map to his family friend, Dr. Livesey. The doctor recognizes the importance of the map and makes a plan along with the local squire to raise funds to start a voyage to recapture the gold and jewels shown in the map. But Jim and doctor commit a great mistake while hiring a crew for their ship. They unknowingly hire an incongruous group of pirates, who is led by the devious one-legged, Long John Silver.

During their voyage in the Treasure Island movie, the non-pirate crew members disappear one by one and when the boat reaches the Treasure Island, Jim and his crew is grossly outnumbered by Long John and his pirate companions. What follows is a subsequent trouble between the mutineers over the buried gold, the young Jim Hawkins is caught between his benefactors and the loving rouge Long John.

The Treasure Island movie is based on Robert Louis Stevensons novel of the same name, which is considered amongst the best children adventures ever written. Several films have been attempted thereafter to recreate the excitement of the book. Byron Haskin rendition is considered the best and the most thrilling edition.

The Treasure Island movie was the first completely live action film from Disney. In the year 1954, a sequel to the film, Long John Silver was made with Newton reappearing in the role of Long John. Newton went on to play the character of Silver again in a TV series called, The Adventures of Long John Silver in the year 1955. The films star Bobby Briscoll earned a star on the Walk of Fame for his role in this film. Wikipedia
