USA Basketball Non Profit Organization

USA Basketball is a non-profit organization that is concerned with the promotion and organization of the game of Basketball, both for the men and for the women. This organization has its headquarters in Colorado in the United States of America. Its main job is to provide proper training to men and women who are professional basketball players and make the proper selection for sending them to play in the International Basketball Federation and other competition of both national and international level.

During the 1970s, the game of basketball flourished among the United States. Many tournaments on basketball began to be held around the country. Keeping in mind the huge demand for learning the sports and to bring all these small tournaments under a single head, the USA Basketball was founded in the year 1974. As many as 15 tournaments including NBA are at present under the administration of this organization. Initially the organization was called the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America.

On the 12th of October, 1989, the organization renamed itself as the USA Basketball. It organizes many important tournaments. Among them, the most important is the Mens and Womens Olympic Basketball competition. It is generally held after every four years. All the basketball playing nations are brought in to participate in this competition. Already, the organization has organized 15 Olympic Basketball competitions and the 16th one is scheduled in the year 2008.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championship is the next major tournament that is organized by the USA Basketball. Like the Olympics, it is a competition involving both the men and the women and is held after every four years. As many as 24 countries participate in the mens rally and 16 countries for the womens. This competition is considered as prestigious as the Olympics. It recently had organized a competition in the year 2006 and the next competition is scheduled in 2010 in Turkey.

Along with these major international championship competitions, the USA Basketball also organized competitions like the Under 21, Under 19 World Championships, the World University games and many more. Its work in the promotion of the game of basketball is appreciated by all organizations in this business around the world.
