Love Story Oscar Award Winning Classic Film


Based on the Erich Seagals best selling short novel of the same name, Love Story is an instrumental, romantic, tearjerker film released in the year 1970. The movie directed by Arthur Hiller is considered one of the most romantic movie of all times by the American Film Institute. The film stars Ali MacGraw, Ryan ONeal and Tommy Lee Jones in his debut role.

The Love Story movie runs in a flashback, is a romantic story of a wealthy Harvard pre-law hockey player, Oliver Barret IV (Ryan). He meets and falls in love with a working class Radcliffe Music student, Jenny Cavilleri (Ali). After graduation, the two decide to get married against the wishes of Olivers father. Olivers father decides to severe ties with his son and stops his financial support.

The couple in the movie Love Story, than lands into a financial mess and Jenny has to work as a private school teacher to fund Olivers cost of study at Harvard Law School. After graduating, Oliver is offered job in a respectable New York law firm. But ill luck follows the couple and Jenny is diagnosed with Leukemia. Oliver is unable to afford the expensive cancer therapy and hospital expenses and turn towards his father for help, which is refused by his father.

The movie Love Story takes a tragic turn as Jenny dies in Olivers arms in the hospital. The movie ends with Oliver speaking to his father about his late wife and resolving all their past misunderstandings. When his father says sorry to Oliver, he quotes Jennys famous remarks; Love Means Never Having to Say Youre Sorry.

The film, Love Story released to a stupendous public and critical acclaim. The film became the top box office grosser of that year. It rescued Paramount from total bankruptcy and started its incredible streak of major success. The film won most of the awards for the year 1970. It won six Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Direction and Original Screenplay.

Love Story won the Oscar Award for Original Music Score: Francis Lai. The film also won five Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture, Best Motion Picture Actress, Best Director, Original Music Score and Best Screenplay. In the year 1978, Paramount came out with a sequel to this movie called Olivers Story, starring Ryan ONeal and Candice Bergen. The sequel was considered inferior to the prequel and proved to be unsuccessful at the box office. Wikipedia
