Appalachian State University Boone North Carolina


Appalachian State University is a public university located in Boone, North Carolina. It is the sixth largest institution in the University of North Carolina system. According to U.S. News and World Reports Americas Best Colleges Guide that began to publish since 1986, the university is recognized to be among the top 15 Southern Masters Universities. TIME Magazine acknowledged the college as the college of the Year. Sometimes it is referred as App State, ASU, or simply App.

A union of citizens of Watauga County, NC started a movement in demand of a good school in Boone, NC. The movement was, at first, led by D.D. Dougherty and B.B. Dougherty. The father of the leaders of the enterprise D.B.Dougherty and Mr. J.F. Hardin donated the land. With the help of other citizens of Boone and Watauga County they established the building and Appalachian State University began in the summer of 1899.

In Appalachian State University Mr. Dauphin D. Dougherty and Blandford B. Dougherty acted as co-principals for four years. At that time the name of the institution was Watauga Academy. Gradually, the school gained attention of the adjoining counties. A bill was introduced in the North Carolina House of Representative to make it a state school so that all the expenditure including the building maintenance would be carried away by the state. The measure was taken and the bill was passed to the Senate. The bill became law on March 9, 1903, and the Appalachian Training School for Teachers was established.

In Appalachian State University the new trustee met in June 1903. They elected Mr. B.B. Dougherty as Superintendent and Mr. D.D. Dougherty as their new principal. The university showed a steady growth in academics and in other valuable services. In 1925 the schools name was changed to Appalachian State normal School. Four Years later they again changed the name to Appalachian State Teachers College. After gaining the college status the property had reached a value of more than $2000000. Professor D.D. Dougherty died on 10th June, 1929 the day of registration for the new college.

In Appalachian State University, 158 students graduated in June and approximately 80 more students graduated in August 1930. A graduate school was formed in 1948 and more than 1100 students were enrolled there in 65 faculty. Appalachian State University offered many programs other than teaching in 1965 and the name at last appropriately changed into Appalachian State University in 1967. Three degree granting undergraduate college came into being after that. These were Arts and Sciences, Fine and Applied Arts, and Education. Appalachian State University became came under the University of North Carolina in the year 1972.

Appalachian State University campus was situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is the highest elevated university in the United States. Mississippi river flows on the eastern side of the university. The centre of the campus is Sanford Mall. The university has all the modern facilities for the students. Wikipedia
