Dawn Goddess Eos

Dawn Goddess is the Titanic Goddess in Greek mythology and is known as Eos. To herald her brother Helios, the sun she rose from her home at the edge of Oceanus, the one that surrounds the world. From the times of Indo-European era, this goddess of dawn is a part of Greek worship. Vedic Ushas and Latin Aurora is where the name Eos s derived from.

In order that Helios could ride his chariot across the sky everyday, Eos the Dawn Goddess opened the gates of Heaven. Its been said that in Homer she has been pictured on Attic vases as a supernaturally beautiful woman, her robe is yellow in color which is woven or embroidered with flowers, she is rosy fingered with golden arms and is crowned with a diadem or tiara with large white feathered wings of a bird.

Preceded by the Morning Star, Eos the Dawn Goddess is seen as the genetrix of all the planets and stars. Its been said that the morning dew is considered to be her tears personified as Herse or Ersa. She is the sister of Helios the sun and Selene the moon. She is the daughter of Theia and Hyperion.

Among the generation of the Titans and also among the handsomest mortals Eos has many consorts and is free with her favors. She bore all the stars and the winds with Asterois. Clitus, Cephalus, Ganymede and Tithonus were kidnapped by the Dawn Goddess to be her lovers. Tithonus was her most faithful consort.

A later Greek poet, Apollodorus claimed that her disgraceful abandon was a torment from Aphrodite who found her on the couch with Ares. She had two sons according to Hesiod by Tithonus. They were Emathion and Memnon. Cephalus was kidnapped by the Dawn Goddess when he was hunting and took him to Syria. Eos bore him three sons, though he was already married that included Hesperus and Phaeton.

The generative Dawn Goddess was Thesan according to Etruscans. She is been depicted as the nurturer by the Etruscans than as an abductor of men. Aurora is her Roman equivalent as Thesan is in Etruscan. In Roman cult the Dawn was associated with Matuta as well as associated with a number of ports and sea harbors. On the Forum Boarium she had a temple as well.

As mentioned the Dawn Goddess had a number of lovers in various myths that included Astraois with whom she bore Boreas, Notus, Zephyrus, Hesperus, Eosphoros and Eurus. It also included her relation with Tithonus with whom she had two sons. Her relation with Cephalus gave her two sons Tithonos and Phaeton and that with Zeus she bore two children Carae and Ersa. The Matralia was celebrated on June 11 which was a festival only for women in their first marriage in honor of Matuta. Wikipedia
