
Tommy Thompson is also known as Tommy George Thompson. He was the 42nd Governor of Wisconsin, and the 7th US Secretary of Health and Human Services. He was born on November 19, 1941. He announced on 'This Week' on April 1, 2007 his candidature for the U.S Presidential Election for the year 2008.
After a disappointing sixth place finish in the key Iowa Straw Poll on August 12, Tommy announced the end of his campaign for President. Tommy Thompson was born in Elroy, Wisconsin. Allen Thompson his father ran a country grocery store and also owned a gas station. Julia, his mother was a schoolteacher by profession. In the United States Army and the United States Army Reserve Thompson was a former Captain.
In the year 1966 Tommy Thompson started his career in politics as a Representative in the Wisconsin State Assembly. From the University of Wisconsin Law School he got a degree in law. In 1973 he was elected assistant Assembly minority leader and in 1981 as the Assembly minority leader.
Tommy Thompson served as the 42nd Governor of Wisconsin from 1987 to 2001 having been elected to an unprecedented four terms. During his thirteen years as Governor of Wisconsin the initiatives of Thompson were his Wisconsin Works school choice and welfare reforms programs. The countrys first parental school choice program was through the efforts of Thompson that allowed low income Milwaukee families to send their children to public or private schools of their choice at the taxpayer expense.
The Badger Care program was also introduced by Tommy Thompson. The program was specially designed to provide the families with health coverage to those whose employers dont provide health insurance. He served as the President of the Council of States Governments from 1998 to 1999 and also led a top level delegation t the Peoples Republic of China with the organizations chairman Senator Kenneth McClintock the nonvoting member from Puerto Rico.
When he was appointed by the President George W Bush as the HHS Secretary he left the office. Tommy Thompson had an Acela locomotive named for him as well as the member of the Amtrak Board of Directors. Ed Thompson who was his brother was the mayor of Tomah, Wisconsin and in the year 2002 Wisconsin gubernatorial election was the Libertarian Party candidate.
On December 3, 2004 he announced his resignation from the HHS. In late 2006 after the first announcement of the formation of an explanatory committee Tommy Thompson announced his candidacy for the presidential election which was held at April 1, 2007. He is also the president of Logistics Health Incorporated. Akin Gump which is a law firm in Washington DC has Thompson as its senior partner.
