
Rusty Hamor was the most loved child star of the 1950s and 1960s. He used to appear in the top ranked TV show of that era, called Make Room for Daddy. He was born on 15th February, 1947, in Tenafly, New Jersey. He also starred in the movie, Dance with Me in the year 1956.
Rusty Hamer got indulged in the Hollywood environment right from his childhood. His father was a film technician, who had developed several patented camera lenses. His mother Dorothy Chertin was also an actress in the silent movies. He started acting at a tender age of 5 in the hit TV show, Make Room for Daddy.
Rusty Hamer essayed the role of a freckle-faced young son of the series lead actor, Danny Thomas. The sitcom, Make Room for Daddy was one of the first TV sitcoms, which was aired when the American TV industry was still in its cradles. Rusty grew up in the serial starting out as a young 5 year old child actor. He became the center of attraction of 335 episode show due to his funny wise-cracking behavior.
Rusty Hamer never actually acted on the show and just delivered smart quips and laughed at his own jokes. He played the character of a know-it-all jerk but got away with it due to his cute, boyish appeal. He laughed at his own jokes and became a darling of the audience. In 1956, he co-starred in one Abbot and Costello movie, Dance with Me.
Rusty Hamer returned to the TV with the remake, Make Room for Granddaddy in 1970-1971. In this serial, Rusty played the role of a medical student. But the show proved to be unsuccessful and had to be cancelled only after one season. This started the downfall of Hamer. He did not earn much during his work in the serial, as the child artists were not paid huge salaries unlike in the modern times. Rusty later went out of work and his screen-daddy, Danny Thomas offered to send him to college and pay for all expenses occurred. But Rustys parents did not accept this offer.
Rusty Hamer was inexperienced about the real world. He had to do odd jokes for survival. He went to Deridder, when his brother John married Martha Houston. Rusty settled there and bought a couple of acres of land near Burdick Lake. Although he had very little mechanical skills, he was hired by an off-shore oil company in 1981. he did not prove to be a good off-shore roustabout despite his friendly and entertaining persona. He resigned in the year 1982.
The following years again prove to be unlucky to Rusty Hamer. He could not find any steady income and worked in his brothers small café for some time. He could not take his downfall and underwent deep depression. He committed suicide by shooting himself on the dreadful day of 18th January, 1990. He became the victim of his own fame in early childhood. His suicide brought into light, the sorry state of a person who is adequately protected by law and film industries policies. Rusty is described as a Child Chattel.
