Joan Bennett Emmy Nominated Actress


Joan Bennett, the American film actress was born on February 27 in 1910. She was an Emmy nominated actress who was recognized later on in the television. The actress was born in Palisade Park in New Jersey. She was the daughter of Richard Bennett and Adrienne Morrison.

Richard Bennett was a stage actress and the grand daughter of the famous stage actor Morris W. Morris, who belonged to the Afro-Caribbean race. Joan Bennett started her career in 1918, for the first time she appeared in the films. Besides she also appeared in some films when she was a child. She got married at an early age of 16 years but unfortunately the marriage ended after two years.

She pursued her acting career again after her break up of her marriage. She got contracted to the 20th century Fox where she appeared as a blonde. Her films included Puttin on the Ritz in 1930 and Me and My Gal in 1932. Again in 1933, she played in Little Women, till then she was not accepted as a serious actress and had to do a lot of hardwork for the recognition. On the parallel side her sister Constances success made the situation more complicated and tough for Joan Bennett.

Constance was one of the most popular Hollywood during that period. Her fame and popularity made the situation more critical for her sister. Joan Bennett then signed an agreement with the producer

Walter Wanger was the one with whom Joan Bennett got married in 1940. Wanger guided and managed her career with the director Toy Garnett. It was Toy Garnett who groomed the actresss hair from blonde to brunette and her new image was accepted instantly by the audience to a large extent and she turned to a glamorous actress.

The actress got many offers, she was chosen as scarlet OHara in Gone with the Wind, by David O.Selznick. In the early 1940s Joan Bennett, appeared in four films, namely Man Hunt, The Woman in the Window, and Scarlet Street, all of them are directed by Fritz Lang.

Apart from these Joan Bennett was also a part of Jean Renoirs The Women on the Beach and in Max Ophulss The Reckless Moment. She also played in Father of the Bride and its sequel, Fathers Little Dividend where she was the wife of Spencer Tracy and mother of Elizabeth Taylor. Unfortunately, the actress has been subjected to various rumors which have affected her career to some extent.

It was heard that she had an affair with her new agent. For this Wanger injured her new agent and he were subjected to imprisonment for 2 years. But Joan Bennett continued her work sincerely both in the television and theatre. The actress was nominated for the Emmy Award for the television series, Dark Shadows. The actress died on December 7, 1990, due to heart attack and buried in Pleasant View Cemetery. Wikipedia
