
Kate Tunstall, better known as KT Tunstall, is a Scottish songwriter and singer who became with her performance on Later with Jools Holland of her song Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. She has enjoyed professional success since her debut and has sold around 4million copies of her albums. In her early days, she mainly focused on songwriting and played in independent bands. Her music style varies between folk and pop.
KT Tunstall mainly played in independent bands like Elia Drew and Tomoko, during her 20s and was mainly concerned with songwriting. In late 2004, her debut album Eye to the Telescope was released. Her first solo performance was Black Horse and the Cherry Tree on Later with Jools Holland. This caught the attention of many viewers and was notable because she had less than 24hours to prepare, when scheduled performer Nas cancelled.
After this appearance, KT Tunstalls Eye to the Telescope was re-released and shot up at the UK charts, climbing to number 3 position and was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize. In 2006, the album was released in the US. She received her North American break through the American Idol participant, Katharine McPhee, who wanted to use her song Black Horse and the Cherry Tree as her choice for a billboard-themed week. The singer licensed the song and the song jumped to 23rd position on the Billboard charts.
A new acoustic album name KT Tunstalls Acoustic Extravaganza was released in May 2006 and was released worldwide in October 2006. Her 2nd Album Drastic Fantastic was released in Scotland in 2007 and reached number 1 position on the Scottish Album charts, number 3 on the UK charts and number 9 on the US charts. Target, in association with NBC, released a special Christmas album which has 6 exclusive tracks including 2000 Miles, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Sleigh Ride etc.
KT Tunstall is for her live performances and combines a loop pedal with a full 4 piece backing band. Some of her famous performances include Suddenly I See, Under the Weather etc. She also performed in numerous American talk shows. Along with this, she performed at the American Leg of Live Earth at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, at Apples The Beat Goes On|, where Apple released their new iPod touch. In 2007, she started in her new town at the Carling Academy in Birmingham.
Born on 23rd June, 1975, KT Tunstall has been dating the drummer in her band, Luke Bullen. She has won many awards including Best Track Q Music Award for Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. She was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, 3 BRIT awards and was awarded a European Border Breakers award along with Scottish Style Awards and Ivor Novello Best song musically and lyrically for Suddenly I See. In 2007, she received Grammy nomination for best female pop vocal performance.
