Infanta Princess Of Spain

Infanta Leonor of Spain was the first child of Felipe, Prince of Asturias and his wife Princess Letizia. She was hence the second in succession to the Spanish throne after her father. Her full name was Leonor de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Ortizn or Eleanor of All the Saints of Bourbon and Ortiz. Since she is the heir to the throne, she is known as Her Royal Highness, Infanta of Spain.

Infanta of Spain has a younger sister, Infanta Sofía. The interesting fact is that her birth created a furor in the country when most of the legislators called for a revision of the Spanish Constitution of 1978, to abolish the precedence of male heirs over their older sisters. She could only become heir when her father was a king; in other cases she would be an heiress presumptive until and unless her parents should have a son. If she becomes a queen she would be the first queen named Leonor of united Spain.

Infanta Leonor was born at 1:46 am in the Ruber International Clinic in Madrid. She was delivered by a caesarean section that had become necessary due to non-progression of labor. As a newborn baby she weighed 3.5 kg and was 47 cm long. The Royal Family via SMS announced her birth to the press and thus it was made the national headlines. The newborn baby and her parents left the clinic on 7 November 2005.

Infanta Leonor was baptized in the Zarzuela Palace on 14 January 2006. The Archbishop of Madrid, Antonio Rouco Varela, baptized her. Similar to her father who was baptized in 1968, Leonor was baptized with water from the river Jordan. This was as per the Spanish Royal Family tradition. Apart from her name, as per the Bourbon tradition, she was also given additional names like de Todos los Santos (of All the Saints). Her paternal grandparents, Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain were her godparents.

Infanta Leonor has the stem cells from her umbilical cord frozen and stored at a blood bank in Tucson, Arizona. This was a standard practice at the clinic where Leonor was born. In that clinic, the stem cells will be frozen for at least 15 years. The clinic at the same time will also store cells of another 18,000 other babies around the world.

Infanta Leonor, however, is not the first royal baby to have her stem cells frozen as previously the stem cells of Prince Christian of Denmark's were frozen as well. Coming from the traditional royal family, the child has a glorious heritage and her ancestors include father who is Felipe, Prince of Asturias, and Paternal Grandfather: Juan Carlos I of Spain and Paternal Great-grandfather Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona.
